They've butchered the tax code beyond the point of insanity and have gutted the workforce at the IRS.

It's so complex and convoluted and contradictory that the tax attorneys I've worked with have all taken the attitude that if they can make a straight-faced argument about how to interpret any given section, the IRS will likely buy it.īut let's not mince words here, this situation is 1000000000000% the fault of Congress. Not the IRS, not Congress, not Intuit, not your local tax attorney. Nobody understands the American tax system. Or maybe I should join and support 'openfile' or whatever the open source tax filing software is. if the IRS could only send out a spreadsheet the implements the tax code. I'm tempted to just go back to doing it on paper I'm so frustrated. THe web based version has gotten crappier and crappier over the years. Intuit just takes advantage of it.Īnd when I did my taxes this year, I ended up buying the PC version because it came with multiple free federal efilings, and you could actually see the damn tax forms. Intuit had nothing to do with the US Tax code and it's complications, it's all down to the Congress and lobbyists who asked for special carve outs when tax codes were written. They only have so much budget able to be allocated to free file policing and support. The IRS isn't perfect but this really isn't their fault. It is absolutely intentional - Intuit paid good money to make it as hard as possible. Intuit is absolutely malicious, but let's not pretend that the IRS doesn't have a stake in continuing to make it a challenge to file easily and free as well.Īs an adult, the only other thing I've found as frustrating as taxes is trying to buy a mattress.

It should not be so damned complicated to figure out how much you owe or will get back, full stop.
Everything about taxes has been made so opaque and difficult to navigate that it seems unquestionably intentional.
